Eight feet of wall on the same footprint as a 30 means the same demolition scope leaves your site in fewer hauls. It is worth being precise about what a 40 is, because the usual explanation — that big boxes are for demolition and smaller boxes are for remodels — is not how these two actually differ. A 30 and a 40 sit on the same ground, need the same delivery clearance, and take the same materials. The 40 simply has two more feet of wall.
Those two feet do one useful thing: they hold more, so the same volume of material leaves in fewer trips. On a full structure demolition or a whole-building strip-out, that is the difference between a container that keeps up with the work and one the crew is always waiting on. Fewer hauls also means fewer mornings where the job pauses for an exchange.
The cost of those two feet is loading. Eight feet is above shoulder height for most people, and pitching debris over that rail is not a realistic all-day proposition. This is the honest limit of the box: it wants material arriving from a machine, down a chute, or over the side from an upper level. Every container has a full-width door at the rear, which handles ground-level material you would rather walk in than lift, but the door does not turn a 40 into a hand-loading container.
What ties these together is that the material is bulky and lightweight and it arrives fast. Framing lumber, sheathing, roofing off a large structure, partition walls, ceiling grid, brush. Volume runs out long before anything else does, which is exactly the situation eight-foot walls were built for.
Same footprint, same clearance, same material. One question decides it: how is the debris getting into the box?
Machine-fed, chute-fed, or coming off an upper level — take the 40. The height costs your crew nothing because nobody is lifting to it, and you get the volume. On a scope already running swap-outs, this is the change that reduces the number of hauls without changing anything about your site.
Hand-loaded from the ground — take the 30. A 30-yard container has six-foot walls, which a person can work over for a full shift. It is the largest box that stays practical when the crew is doing the lifting, and on a hand-loaded job it will out-work a 40 despite holding less.
Smaller scopes step down from there: a 20-yard box for mixed remodel debris, and our smallest roll-off for a single roof or a single room. If you want the whole range together, compare every container we run before you book.
What the 40 will not do: carry weight — and it is the worst box in the lineup to try it in, because you would reach the legal hauling limit with the container barely covered. Concrete, dirt, rock, brick, and asphalt go in the rock box, the only container rated to carry that weight. A demolition scope producing both wants a 40 for the structure and a rock box for the slab. Say so at booking and both land the same day.
Plan on about 60 feet of straight approach and 23 feet of overhead clearance — the same as every other container we run, including the 30 that shares this footprint. A 40 does not need a bigger site than a 30. It goes out on a full-size truck, so a site that was only reachable by the smaller trucks serving our 15 and 20-yard containers is a different conversation; describe the approach when you book and dispatch will tell you straight.
Flag overhead lines, gate widths, low branches, soft or unimproved ground, and any surface worth protecting. Plywood under the rails protects finished concrete and we bring it when you tell us in advance. On a demolition site, tell us which end you want the door facing and where the machine will be working — a container set the wrong way round on a 20-foot box is a real problem, not a small one.
Load level with the top rail and no higher. Nothing may ride above the rail, and on a box with walls this tall that is easy to overshoot without noticing. Lay long stock flat rather than letting it bridge and trap air underneath — on a container this size a careless load can waste most of a haul. If you reach level with material still on the ground, call for a swap while the crew is working rather than after they have stopped.
